Case summary
Dutch male passenger (age 70), husband of index case PEDB43, sharing Cabin 406. Per WHO/USA Today May 7 official summary: developed fever, headache, and mild diarrhea on April 6; died aboard MV Hondius on April 11 — the first death in the outbreak (5 days after symptom onset). Important: no samples were taken at time of death and hantavirus was not initially identified. Argentine authorities' leading hypothesis (AP, May 7 2026): couple contracted hantavirus during a bird-watching outing in Ushuaia before boarding on April 1. WHO confirmed couple traveled Argentina, Chile, AND Uruguay prior to boarding (Al Jazeera, May 7 2026). Investigators also tracing their route through forested hillsides of Patagonia. Tierra del Fuego province had never previously recorded a hantavirus case. Body removed to St. Helena on April 24. Early reporting erroneously described him as evacuated to Punta Arenas — corrected to 'died on the ship' per WHO/AFP/Manila Times.
